Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are a very common cause of vision loss worldwide, and affect more than 20 million Americans over the age of 40. Almost every individual will experience some cataract formation by age 70. A clouding of the eye’s clear lens causes diminished eyesight and, if left untreated, may even lead to blindness. Surgery is the only treatment option, since there are no medications or exercises to prevent the formation or progression of cataracts. More than one million cataract operations are performed in the U.S. each year.

At GTOC, we specialize in what is known as “small incision cataract surgery.” During this outpatient procedure, done under local anesthesia, a tiny incision is made, and the cloudy lens (cataract) is removed. It is then replaced with a permanent artificial lens. Laser treatment is sometimes necessary after cataract surgery to remove a clouding that can interfere with vision.

The cataract procedure is brief, carries minimum risk, and recovery can be quick. Most patients experience significant improvement in vision as soon as the day after surgery. The main reason to undergo cataract surgery? Better vision means better quality of life!
